This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of both the Milwaukee, Wisconsin Cryptosporidium Outbreak in March - April 1993, and the Carrollton, Georgia Cryptosporidium Outbreak
in January - February 1987, and lessons learned from those incidents. The Waterborne Disease and Outbreak
Surveillance System is presented, along with positive impacts of national drinking water
regulations and water system practices that include the following: decreasing outbreaks in public
water systems; public (regulated) systems vs.
individual (unregulated); surface water vs. groundwater; Legionella; unregulated deficiencies outside
the jurisdiction of a water utility; limitations of
outbreak surveillance data; and, factors influencing outbreak detection,
investigation, and reporting. Includes figures.
