This powerpoint presentation presents a project by the Atlantic City Municipal Utilities Authority (ACMUA) to expand its filtration facilities to allow for additional capacity,
remove a filter from service for maintenance, and
meet the turbidity goal of 0.1 ntu
(current turbidity limit of 0.3 ntu). The pilot testing goal was to compare different media configurations at the
loading rate of 5.5 gpm/sf. Pilot data compared is presented, along with filter media selection, filter media configurations, filtered water turbidity, unimproved filter deficiencies, implemented improvements, improved backwash sequence, and design challenges. Presentation conclusions indicate the following:
higher throughput can be achieved while
maintaining quality by rehabilitating the filters; savings in capital cost;
L/d3 gives a better representation of particle
removal characteristics of the media; combined sedimentation and filtration
upgrades have reduced filtrate turbidities from
0.22 NTU to 0.03 NTU; and,
the filter upgrades plus adding air scour
reduced backwash water requirements by 66%. Includes tables, figures.
