This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of manganese forms, problems and standards. A case study is presented of manganese removal from groundwater (GW)
at the Lantern Hill Water Treatment Plant. Topics covered include: reduction and dissolution of manganese oxides; investigation of manganese release from filter media
(Biotic or Abiotic?); steps - molecular analysis of DNA from GW and
full scale filter media samples; results - laboratory column experiments with
full-scale filter media; and, observation - laboratory column experiments with full-scale GS:
Set III (not autoclaved media and acetate feed). Results: the molecular analysis of the DNA extracted from the LH GW and full scale GS
media showed presence of manganese and iron reducing micro-organisms;
significant level of Mn release was observed only from the column with adequate
carbon source and non-autoclaved media samples; and,
the molecular analysis results of the GS media (that showed steady manganese
release in laboratory column study with sodium acetate feed) showed 98% of the
representative micro-organisms were manganese reducers. Includes figures.
