This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the Los Angeles water system. A case study is presented that includes the following: in October 2007, high concentrations of
bromate were discovered in several open
distribution reservoirs; intensive investigation exposed unlikely
sources of bromate; and, regulatory challenges were to determine if an MCL had been violated, to quickly reduce bromate levels, and to apply the bromate MCL to the distribution
system. The open distribution reservoirs included the Elysian, Ivanhoe,
and Silver Lake Reservoirs. A sunlight reduction study that used shade balls on the surface of the reservoirs is presented.
