Spurred by the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and the Energy Independence and Security Act
of 2007 as well as regulatory mandates, the U.S. electric industry is beginning to deploy
Smart Metering and Smart Grid technologies that collect hourly frequent data from
customers' meters as well as continuously monitor and control the distribution system. A similar initiative has been established in Ontario, Canada. Some cities, including Austin, Texas
and Boulder, Colorado are the focus of pilots and demonstrations of this technology. Includes table, figure.
