This powerpoint presentation begins by presenting a brief overview of Biological Treatment
Process Fundamentals. Direct biological perchlorate
destruction demonstration testing
in Rialto, California, is presented and technical objectives included: evaluating efficacy of using fixed-bed (FXB) bioreactors and
post-treatment to convert perchlorate-contaminated
water into potable water;
demonstrate sustained removal capabilities;
identify process limitations and potential failure scenarios; and,
develop accurate full-scale facility lay-outs and cost
estimates. Pilot testing phases included:
Phase I: Biological Acclimation;
Phase II: Optimization;
Phase III: Sustained Removal; and,
Phase IV: Robustness Testing. EDR/BIOBROx perchlorate
destruction pilot testing at the
Magna Water District is presented, and had the following objectives: demonstrate efficacy BIOBROx approach;
develop design criteria for blend ratio and
EBCT;
demonstrate sustained perchlorate removal;
evaluate robustness of the process during
system upsets (system shut-downs, WW
feed failures, diurnal variations in WW); and,
identify optimal biogrowth support medium. The experimental design included:
Phase 1: Biological Acclimation;
Phase 2: Percent Blend and EBCT Optimization;
Phase 3: Sustained Removal; and,
Phase 4: Robustness Characterization. Includes figures.
