This paper presents beneficial reuse of reverse osmosis (RO) concentrate produced by membrane systems used for wastewater reuse and brackish groundwater desalination. RO concentrate could be as much as 25% of the feed stream for wastewater reuse applications and brackish groundwater desalination, and represents a polluting stream. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate innovative technology that could be used to transform RO concentrate into beneficial products. Bipolar Membrane Electrodialysis (BMED) for conversion of RO concentrates into mixed acids and bases. The results suggest that mixed acids and bases of strengths up to 0.2 N could be produced using the BMED process. Includes 14 references, tables, figures.
