This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the drivers for considering alternative disinfection methods, and the California Code of Regulations, Title 22 on Approved Disinfection Technologies. A project at a northern California utility is presented, with the project goal of
selecting the most suitable disinfection technology
through a site-specific alternatives analysis. Disinfection technology criteria included:
small footprint;
meet or exceed 5-log removal of poliovirus;
minimal operator attention;
Title 22 approved;
proven performance; and,
maintain pressure head from membranes. Technologies selected for evaluation included:
in-vessel MP UV Disinfection (Aquionics);
HiPOx System (Applied Process Technology); and,
pasteurization (Pasteurization Technology Group). An evaluation summary of the three technologies is presented, along with life cycle cost comparisons. Conclusions indicate: site specific alternatives analysis is key; UV, ozone, and pasteurization - Title 22 approved, proven disinfectants for various applications; and, costs are similar, though site-specific issues are critical. Includes table, figures.
