In March 2002, Metropolitan Water District of Southern California initiated the Weymouth Oxidation Retrofit Program (ORP)
to add ozone disinfection facilities to the F.E. Weymouth Water Treatment Plant. This program was tasked to
incorporate Metropolitan's newly developed California Friendly® Landscape concepts
and water conserving landscaping irrigation systems. After a series of site planning efforts conducted for Weymouth ORP, Metropolitan staff
and consultants designed landscaping plans that utilized both smart irrigation systems and
low water use California Friendly® Landscape along the western and northern
boundaries of the plant. This paper outlines the lessons learned from designing Metropolitan's smart irrigation
systems and incorporating water-conserving California Friendly® Landscape concepts
into an existing 65-year old facility, and discusses the strategies for future landscape
improvements at other Metropolitan facilities. Includes tables, figures, appendix.
