The results of a survey sent to 37 water utilities that use chlorine dioxide indicated that the primary reason for application of ClO2 is for THM control, and that many utilities are using this oxidant year-round. Data were acquired on water quality characteristics of the raw and treated water, treatment processes, and tastes and odors that occurred when chlorine dioxide was applied. Previous studies showed some odors were produced from the gas phase reaction of chlorine dioxide present in the tap water at customers' homes with organic chemicals existing in the homes--most notably fumes emitted from new carpets. In this survey, kerosene and cat urine-like odors were definitively linked with chlorine dioxide use and associated with the presence of new carpeting and remodeling in individual homes. The taste-and-odor problems associated with chlorine dioxide were not correlated to raw or finished water quality parameters or site- specific conditions for oxidant generation.
