The occurrence concentration of radium, uranium and radon in drinking water are examined along with a discussion of the corresponding health effects. This information is then combined to produce the estimated population risks involved, and that leads to some thoughts about possible ranges of values for standards. Tables show estimated risk levels and the number of deaths that can be attributed to each radionuclide in a 70-year period. Radon is responsible for about 80 percent of the radionuclide-induced deaths. Based on this analysis, if the radium standard is kept at 5 pCi/L, the likely range of possible standards for uranium would be 10-50 pCi/L and the radon standard could be in the range of 200-2000 pCi/L.
