The AWWA Committee on Emerging Technologies in Computers and Automation is charged with reviewing and assessing the research needs and the applicability of advances in computer hardware and software for the water utility industry. The committee asked a number of professionals from government agencies, consulting engineers, and administrators of water utilities to participate in a roundtable discussion to examine the current status and future needs of the industry. This paper summarizes their personal views. No attempt has been made to reconcile or prioritize their suggestions, but eventually the committee will prepare a research needs statement based on the needs expressed by the panel and the audience. Topics covered include the state of Missouri public drinking water program's experience with computers, emerging technologies and automation, and use of computers in research.
