This paper discusses the use of hydrogen peroxide/visible- ultraviolet irradiation (H2O2/Vis-UV) to remove organics from water. Chemical mechanisms, including photochemistry and photo adsorption, quantum yield, and UV irradiation and decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, are discussed. The process resulted in a significant increase in oxidation rate for all compounds studied compared to the oxidation rates found for hydrogen peroxide alone. The process is a successful treatment technology for organic contamination of leachates (20-60 mg/L concentration). Conclusions regarding experimental operations parameters (mole ratio, lamp wattage, etc.) are given.
