Several areas in the state of New Jersey depend on groundwater for their potable water. With over 100,000 nonpublic wells used for potable water supply in New Jersey, the potential for widespread contamination affecting large numbers of people is significant. In several townships that rely exclusively on groundwater, the presence of contamination, principally by volatile organic chemicals, has forced homeowners to use bottled water for several years. This case study, termed project POET, describes how a neighborhoodwide point-of-entry treatment (POET) system was implemented to provide an interim source of potable water to more than 100 homes until a safe, reliable and permanent water supply system was established.
