The objectives of this study were to address the general treatment operation problems relating to polyaluminum hydroxychloride coagulants and provide specific, quantifiable performance improvements. The criteria for these improvements were set by the management of the water utilities studied and verified by data from the operation logs. In order to keep the data manageable the performance benefit objectives were grouped into four major categories. 1) Reduce alkali usage for pH adjustment. 2) Reduce chemical sludge generation due to the coagulant (and alkali if applicable). 3) Improve filtration performance in terms of effluent turbidity and/or filter run length. 4) Provide reliable treatment during raw water quality excursions. The data presented represents, in some cases, two years continuous use of polyaluminum hydroxychloride coagulants.
