This study observed statistically the relationship between finished water characteristics or corrosion control strategies and residential lead levels. The findings show that corrosion inhibitors are associated with lower percentages of homes with over 15 ppb of lead. Another table shows that differences in lead contamination risk are also associated with which method a water utility uses for adjusting the pH of its finished water. To isolate the effectiveness of specific phosphate-based corrosion inhibitors over a range of water conditions, a linear regression model employing pH, water hardness and phosphate corrosion inhibitor type regressed against the natural logarithm of residential lead concentrations was fitting using all water systems surveyed. Figures show plots of 90th percentile lead concentrations as a function of pH and corrosion control additives for three different water hardness levels, as compared to the action level in the Lead and Copper Rule.
