This paper summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of each of the following chemicals, along with a summary of research needs associated with each chemical. Pretreatment oxidants: potassium permanganate, chlorine dioxide, ozone, advanced oxidation processes; primary disinfectants: chlorine dioxide and ozone; secondary disinfectants: monochloramine. For purposes of this paper, oxidation includes taste and odor control, oxidation of reduced iron and manganese, color removal, control of nuisance aquatic growths, and control of disinfection byproducts.
