This study evaluated the effectiveness of various brands of powdered activated carbon (PAC) to adsorb geosmin and MIB. Raw water was used which reflected a range of geosmin/MIB concentrations and naturally occurring organic compounds (NOOCs) typically encountered at Lake Manatee (Florida) water treatment plant. Experimental design simulated actual plant operational parameters. Several conclusions of general interest to other similar facilities and with similar water quality can be drawn: some PACs adsorb geosmin/MIB better than others; geosmin is adsorbed better than MIB; NOOCs decrease adsorption of geosmin/MIB; the amount of decreased adsorption due to NOOC varies among PACs; a PAC which adsorbs geosmin better than another PAC, will also adsorb MIB better; percent removals remain relatively constant for a given PAC as odorant concentration varies from 20 ng/L to 80 ng/L; correlation analyses indicate that phenol value, iodine number, molasses number and surface area are poorly correlated to geosmin/MIB adsorption; a strong correlation (inverse relationship) exists between tannin value and geosmin/MIB adsorption.
