This paper describes pilot scale experiments using chlorine and full scale chlorination for zebra mussel control at a drinking water treatment facility in Western New York State. The objectives of this research project were to: (1) quantify the effects of chlorine dose, contact time, and temperature on zebra mussel mortality; (2) determine trihalomethane formation potential during treatment of zebra mussels with chlorine; and (3) test the applicability of disinfection models to zebra mussel inactivation. Chlorine was found to be effective, although contact time increases substantially as temperature decreases. In this case, it did not result in increased trihalomethane formation.
