The first objective of this research project was to develop and test analytical methods for the identification of various disinfection by-products. The methods developed were then employed to determine by-products formed after laboratory ozonation of raw water samples from sites in New Jersey. A complete laboratory treatment protocol was developed that included ozonation, coagulation, filtration and final disinfection with chlorine or monochloramine. The effects of the complete treatment process on DBP formation were then examined. The results show that ozone/monochloramine produces some chlorinated byproducts at higher concentrations than ozone/chlorine. However, ozone/monochloramine clearly leads to significantly lower levels of trihalomethanes than ozone/chlorine. The level of aldehydes produced depends on both the ozone dose and the TOC concentration of the water; formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, glyoxal, and methylglyoxal account for 80 to 85 percent of the total aldehydes produced.
