Utilities with sources not yet affected by zebra mussels may soon be faced with decisions between proven biocidal efficacy and the potential for negative water quality impact. Until physical control measures are perfected, biocide selection will be dependent upon impacts on water quality, economics, ease of implementation and necessary regulatory permits and approvals. Water quality impacts analysis should address both present and probable future standards for disinfection byproducts, disinfectants, synthetic organic chemicals and corrosivity.
