This paper explores the use of prefiltration intakes and provides an overview of the considerations that need to be made at the time of evaluating alternatives. The paper provides some alternative intake configurations that might be attractive to communities faced with zebra mussel problems. It also presents the case for careful evaluation of your water supply, the physical setting that you are in, and the potential for other related concerns that could impact your water supply in the future. It is not the purpose of this paper to come to definitive conclusions about the best alternative, since it is highly dependent on site specific conditions. The objective is to put the alternatives into perspective and to provide some generic cost considerations that will provide food for thought on this topic.
