Reclaimed water for the Irvine Ranch Water District (IRWD) system is produced at the Michelson Water Reclamation Plant (MWRP). The MWRP produces up to 15 gallons per day of disinfected tertiary treated effluent. This product water meets all health and water quality requirements of the state of California for unrestricted non-potable uses. These uses include the irrigation of all agricultural crops, including those likely to be eaten raw, all landscape irrigation including streetscapes, golf courses, school yards and athletic fields, public and private parks, body contact recreation use, and most recently use inside commercial buildings for toilet flushing. The MWRP process consists of primary sedimentation, activated sludge aeration, secondary clarification, dual media filtration, and extended chlorination. No residuals handling is performed. Primary and secondary sludges and spent backwash solids are collected and pumped to a regional treatment facility operated by the County Sanitation Districts of Orange County.
