In Western Europe there is a growing awareness that the environment is one of the crucial production factors. This paper is restricted predominantly to the Dutch situation, bearing in mind that the situation in other West European countries is not much different. The following topics are outlined in this paper: national environmental policy in the Netherlands; environmental policy of Dutch drinking water companies; waste products and residuals; treatment processes for backwash water and sludge; recovery of backwash water; coagulant recovery from sludge; arsenic removal from iron containing sludge; and dewatering.
