The overall objective of this study was to investigate and quantify the impact of anion exchange resin on the performance of activated carbon. Two positive effects of the resin were expected. The overall amount of natural organic matter fed to the carbon absorber would be reduced and the resins would remove a fraction of the organic matter that was not amenable to GAC adsorption. The anion exchange resin should prefer charged and thus more polar compounds. These compounds are less adsorbable on activated carbon. Both effects should lead to longer GAC operation times, less carbon fouling and less formation of disinfection byproducts.
