The methodology employed in this study is simple and easy to be implemented for the development of relationship between leakage rate and operational pressure in the network. The results obtained in this study indicate that leakage increases sharply with increase in pressure. Leakage rate increased two to three times as the pressure increased from 1.5 to 5.0 bars. The theoretical orifice equation does not give a realistic representation of leakage rate with pressure. The regression results show that the power equation is more reliable than the polynomial equation in explaining the relation between leakage and leakage rate. Also the relation between leakage and pressure is completely different for the cases of major and minor leaks. The relationships obtained in this study between leakage factor and pressure can accurately predict the relative changes in leakage rate that can be induced by a given change in pressure. This will help in understanding the potential advantages of pressure reduction and using it as a measure for leakage control.
