The Mexican economy is undergoing dramatic changes. Decades of widespread government intervention are giving way to a new economic model in which the private sector has become the main protagonist of economic activity. The Mexican government has privatized more than 1,000 public enterprises in one of the most successful efforts undertaken by any country. Privatization has reached many politically sensitive sectors which in the past were exclusive province of the government, such as airlines, telecommunications, road construction, banks and financial services. The water industry has now become a target for reform.
