Recent health effects data indicates a need to reduce the current maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 0.050 mg/L for arsenic. Because available information was limited to a 0.005 mg/L detection limit for arsenic, the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) undertook a research program to study several technologies to reduce arsenic levels to 0.002 mg/L. The study program included continuous-flow testing of ion-exchange (IE), reverse osmosis (RO), nanofiltration (NF), and electrodialysis reversal (EDR) treatment processes to establish the extent of arsenic removal during water treatment. This paper describes the results of an evaluation conducted by Malcolm Pirnie for the removal of arsenic.
