A one-year survey of trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) concentration changes in the Elizabethtown Water Company's drinking water distribution system (New Jersey, United States) indicates that THMs increased significantly after one day's residence time in the distribution system, while HAAs decreased significantly after three days in the distribution system. The authors conclude that if the maximum THMs and HAAs concentrations in the distribution system are to be monitored, sampling locations have to be different for these two groups of compounds.
