Adsorption processes for the removal of lower molecular weight organics from water generally suffer substantial losses of efficiency in the presence of high concentrations of natural organic matter (NOM). This research investigated the use of an alternative adsorbent material, termed organoclay, which appears to selectively concentrate the targeted organic with no loss in capacity in the presence of NOM. An organoclay was prepared by treating montmorillonite with a cationic surfactant, hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide, for the adsorption of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol from drinking water. Isotherm data and temperature-dependent studies showed that the modified clay removes low molecular weight organics and high molecular weight organics by two different mechanisms.
