The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) is considering revising the existing maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 0.05 mg/l of arsenic in drinking water. The ion exchange process was evaluated as a potential candidate to remove arsenate ion to a level of 0.002 mg/l. Four pilot-scale columns were run in parallel using a strong base anion (SBA) exchange resin for the evaluation. Chromatographic peaking and concentration gradient phenomenon were observed to occur during the course of the study. Raw water and regenerant solution characteristics were evaluated as a measure of the amount of ion selectivity that occurred. Three regeneration procedures were tested to determine their effect on the ability to restore resin capacity. The pilot-scale results of the continuous flow tests were compared to the results obtained from several full-scale installations. These studies demonstrated the ability of the SBA resin to remove arsenic to the 0.002 mg/l target value.
