To evaluate the occurrence and the formation of DBPs in the American Water System (American System), a research project was initiated in September 1989. A system wide DBP survey was conducted on the selected American System water treatment plants to evaluate the impact of sources of supply, treatment practices, different disinfectants and seasonal changes on the formation of DBPs. In addition, the effectiveness of GAC was evaluated for DBP control. Phase I of the survey was conducted in the Fall of 1989 with 17 water treatment facilities and one pilot plant; Phase II was conducted in the Winter of 1991 with 21 treatment facilities and Phase III was conducted in the Summer of 1991 with 23 facilities. In addition to the above mentioned DBP survey, the American System Water Quality Control and Research Laboratory in Belleville, Illinois, has been monitoring distribution system DBPs since 1991. As part of the study, the DBP monitoring data for the years 1991 and 1992 were analyzed with similar objectives as the DBP survey data.
