The data presented in this paper are part of a larger study examining enhanced coagulation by jar testing and by piloting. This paper will give an overview of the results of jar testing. It will: relate the control of TOC to the control of other measures of precursors, i.e., UV-absorbing compounds and the formation of DBPs like TTHMs, HAAs, total haloacetonitriles (THANs), chloral hydrate (CH) and chloropicrin (CP); compare alum and iron and coagulants; and compare the coagulant regimes wherein the following occur: conventional treatment, i.e, based on turbidity control; optimal treatment, i.e., based on maximum removal of TOC; and regulatory treatment; i.e., based on achieving the Step 1 target percent removals of TOC.
