In recent years, there has been much new development in the Village of Woodridge, New York, as well as an influx of tourists in the summer months, causing significant growth to the community and a new strain on its water supply. In addition to the population surge, changing water quality regulations associated with enforcement of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), were causing the Village to review its water treatment process. The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) had contacted the Village of Woodridge concerning its inability to meet current regulations. Upon the suggestion of the NYSDOH, the Village met with New York State Self-Help Program personnel to discuss ways to make improvements to their water system. Based on the recommendations of the Self-Help office, the Village began an investigation into the possibility of building a new slow sand filtration plant. For the Village of Woodridge, slow sand filtration appeared to be the most feasible way to meet the needs of the community. This paper discusses the design and construction of their slow sand filtration plant.
