This paper discusses exploratory studies on the incorporation of radium into and radon release from deposit material formed when several corrosion control strategies are implemented. These included precipitation of calcium carbonate and phosphate addition. Phosphate containing coatings and deposits are a particular concern because it is well known that phosphate bearing minerals can accumulate large amounts of radium. The authors are particularly interested in determining the radium content of the deposits under the experimentally difficult conditions where small amounts of deposits are formed and little radium is actually removed from the water, but where the amount of radium per unit mass of deposit could be very high. This investigation shows that addition of phosphate and zinc phosphate can potentially increase the accumulation of radium and release of radon from resulting deposits. The observed q values are sufficiently high to indicate a potential problem and possible linkage between two pending regulations, one for radon and the other for lead and copper.
