Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT) technology to renovate the water quality of secondary effluents intended for potable reuse is being simulated at the bench and pilot scale. Although nitrogen speciation and the fate and transport of pathogenic viruses are of major concern, effluent organic matter (EfOM), which acts as a disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursor, can be problematic. A survey of the biodegradability of EfOM in six secondary effluents form three states utilizing two biological treatments prior to discharge was conducted. Biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) measurements were performed upon the raw effluents as well as ozonated effluents. It was observed that although 38-71% of the EfOM within the surveyed effluents is biodegradable, only a modest increase in biodegradability was witnessed upon ozonation. Comparisons are made to natural organic matter (NOM).
