As part of a plan to meet future demands for water supply, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utility Department (CMUD) retained Black & Veatch to design a new water treatment facility located in the northern part of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. This design included a capacity study for all components of the facility, a siting study for the intake and raw water transmission mains, and a pilot plant study to determine the optimum treatment processes. This paper describes the design of the intake and water transmission systems for the new plant. Gravity flow with siphon flow capability during periods of low lake levels was selected over pumped flow or gravity flow alone because of substantially reduced costs. Siphon flow will provide a savings of more than $1 million when compared to gravity flow alone and more than $3 million when compared to pumped flow. Required piping depths are also more reasonable than for gravity flow.
