With the arrival of user-friendly network simulation software, the variety of uses of network models has expanded. Whereas previously, models were used solely for planning capital investment, models are now being used to assist with managing the system operation. Network models are being used not only by design engineers, but also by operational personnel, planners and others who require distribution network data. With this increased user base, the demand for models, particularly models containing all mains, has increased significantly. Many larger water companies such as Severn Trent Water (STW) Ltd have an ongoing program of model building to satisfy the requirements of the business, both on the engineering and operational sides. By the end of 1994, STW had 90 models available for use, covering a population of some five million customers. Full model coverage is planned to be completed by 1998/99. Like any other company asset, network models deteriorate without regular attention and maintenance. Changes that take place in the real distribution network that are not updated on the model will lead to model inaccuracies. These can have the ultimately cumulative effect of rendering the model useless as an engineering or operational tool. This paper analyzes this deterioration and proposes procedures to address the maintenance problem to keep models useful.
