Treatment of a surface water source is accompanied by the need for an effective residuals management program. The City of Englewood, Colorado, has met this need by developing a method that recycles the residuals as a fill material for landscaping berms at a local golf course. The Allen Filter Plant is supplied by the south Platte River and primarily uses aluminum sulfate and polymer to remove the naturally occurring dissolved and suspended material from the raw water. After these chemicals are added, the solids are removed by settling in the 80 mg (302,800 m3) presedimentation reservoir and the dual media filters. Additional material is removed from the filter by a backwashing process. After 15 years of storing water treatment residuals, the City is confident they have found a viable method of handling and recycling these residuals. With this method of residual management, future landfill capacity can be prolonged and may not be needed if future sites can be identified.
