The objectives of this research were to: identify coagulation conditions that optimize dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal; fractionate the DOC in the raw and treated waters into the MS and H/NH fractions and assess how those fractions contribute to the disinfection byproduct precursor; and determine the tendency of each of these fractions to removal by conventional and optimized coagulation. The DOC of each water was divided into MS fractions by ultrafiltration techniques and into humic/non-humic fractions by XAD-8 resins. The fractions were chlorinated under Uniform Formation Conditions and assessed for DBP formation.
