This paper addresses high rate dissolved air flotation (DAF) treatment technology including short flocculation times, high DAF hydraulic loading rates, and high filter rates. It summarizes research carried out at the pilot scale in 1997-98 at Newport News, Virginia, and at Fairfield, Connecticut. The objectives of the research were: to confirm the use of very short flocculation times of 6-7 minutes; to investigate DAF hydraulic loading rates of 17-44 m/hr (7-18 gpm/sf); and, to investigate various filter designs including rates of 10 and 20 m/hr (4 and 8 gpm/sf). The study examined the quality of DAF clarified water and filtered water as well as filtered water production. The DAF tank was intentionally tested at hydraulic loadings high enough to cause air bubbles to leave the tank without preventive measures. Mitigation of air bubble carryover was also investigated. An important aspect of the research was examination of the integration of high rate treatment from flocculation through DAF clarification and filtration.
