This paper examines potential water treatment methods that would increase chloramine stability within the distribution system and decrease the amount of ammonia released due to chloramine decay. The primary treatment methods studied include pH control and natural organic matter removal through conventional and enhanced coagulation. The effects of a free chlorine contact period prior to chloramination were also studied. This research used Lake Mendota (Madison, Wisconsin) water that was treated as necessary with a pilot-plant. The chloramine decay and ammonia release experiments were conducted in laboratory bench-scale experiments.
