The objectives of this paper were to evaluate the hydrologic variability in the rate of infiltration, and to develop a monitoring plan to help evaluate periods of potential surface water contamination. The groundwater operational monitoring program for the Bolton well field put into effect at the Cincinnati Water Works (CWW) consists of daily-induced infiltration rates determined by monitoring river stage, water temperature and groundwater levels at four locations along a 1.5 mile reach of the river. River channel profiles have been surveyed and are being used to establish the realtionship between river stage and wetted streambed area. Daily rates of infiltration were calculated using a modified version of the infiltration spreadsheet model. Water quality monitoring is performed during or shortly after periods of high-induced infiltration. By initiating a monitoring plan that focuses on groundwater quality changes during high infiltration events, the CWW will further investigate the relationship between hydraulic influence of surface water and the filtering and adsorptive natural purification in an alluvial aquifer.
