This paper shows how the General Utilities group of water companies in the United Kingdom has effectively reduced their leakage by 25% over a 3-year period by optimizing the use of resources integrating information management. The paper describes how the network is broken down into manageable leakage zones; how reporting is done on physical integrity of the zones through Geographic Information Systems (GIS), night flow through telemetry, customer information through billing system and meter accuracy through meter database; how this information is integrated to produce pseudo real time reporting for quick and efficient targeting of resources; how monitoring efficiency of detection and repair through job management report and leakage quantification through telemetry is achieved; and how comparison of water saved with costs coming from financial system is done to calculate cost effectiveness.
