In 1996, Cincinnati Water Works (CWW) initiated a flushing pilot program to evaluate the effectiveness of an alternative flushing technique, unidirectional flushing (UDF), in terms of reducing turbidity and customer complaints. UDF consists of isolating specific sections of main by closing appropriate valves and opening appropriate hydrants in an organized and sequential manner in order to create a single direction of water flow. The sections of main are flushed systematically to ensure that water flows progressively from a clean source to the periphery of the system, from large to small mains, and from clean to dirty mains. UDF reportedly has greater cleaning efficiency, longer term benefits, and uses less water than conventional flushing. The pilot program was conducted in two phases: a low velocity phase followed by a high velocity phase performed to evaluate additional benefits gained through increased flushing velocity. Water quality parameters and customer complaints from the pilot area were monitored thoughout the study.
