The objective of this paper is to present representative data for the transformation of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen along a longitudinal gradient through a full-scale constructed wetland in Kingman, Arizona, which receives lagoon-treated wastewater effluent. Conceptual models are presented to support the field data. Previous work has been limited to primarily wetland input and output measurements, with limited data on internal wetland transformations. While some of the DOC biodegraded, it was apparent that the wetland was also a source of non-labile DOC that was reactive with chlorine in forming disinfection byproducts. For wetlands receiving higher DOC, such as nitrified wastewater, then the leaching of plant-derived DOC may become even more important as a percentage of the overall DOC pool, since less of the influent DOC would be labile.
