Object-oriented programming (OOP) can be an effective tool in determining the safe yield of a utility's water supply. STELLA(R), an example of an object-oriented programming language, was used to model three systems of reservoirs. The first model predicted the safe yield of a system of reservoirs, wells, and rivers that operates under complex operational rules and constraints. The second model evaluated the effects of various withdrawal and release scenarios on the safe yield of a water supply reservoir proposed to supplement an exisitng reservoir system. The simulation included an interconnection of the existing system, which consists of five reservoirs, with the proposed reservoir. The model predicted the system's safe yield under a variety of operating conditions and determined which factors had the greatest impact on the safe yield. The third model, which simulated the upper Black Warrior River Basin in alabama, was developed in part to determine whether additional system storage was required to accommodate multiple uses including power generation, navigation, flood control, and drinking water supply. While comparisons to an existing HEC-5 model of the system indicated similar results, the STELLA(R) model was easily understood and used by individuals not involved in the model development process. It was also more easily modified to simulate alternate operating procedures. Includes 6 references.
