This paper offers a general introduction to and overview of network analysis. The basic problem of distribution system analysis involves determining the pressures and flow rates of the system in response to a number of conditions: tank levels, loading conditions, and operating conditions. The analysis is governed by the conservation of mass equation and the conservation of energy equation; each of these are discussed. The hydraulic network equations can be solved by computer modeling. Most models are run on microcomputers; how the models work is briefly described. The application of a network model to the analysis of a distribution system comprises three parts: development, calibration, and application; each of these steps is discussed in some detail. Future trends are summarized: integrated graphics environments, real-time simulation, optimal design programs and transient analysis, assessment and improvement of network reliability, optimization applications, and network rehabilitation analysis and water quality analysis.
