All treatment processes and distribution systems require both control and monitoring--many times over a large physical area. Two devices that have become very effective at controlling and monitoring are the programmable logic controller (PLC) and remote terminal unit (RTU). These devices have more similarities than differences. This paper will highlight the similarities and differences and help the end user select which device to use in his/her particular application.
