Integrating automated mapping and facilities management (AM/FM) with hydraulic analysis software provides an effective management tool for water system managers. This paper discusses some advantages of the integration (data need be entered only once for many uses) and discusses practical issues to consider when integrating AM/FM and hydraulic analysis, with an emphasis on the small to medium sized water system utility or municipality. This paper is primarily for medium and small water systems. The author explains what AM/FM systems do and offers brief discussions on a number of pieces of advice. The advice includes: Project definition is the key. To provide flexibility for the future, plan ahead. Work smart: effort increases exponentially with level of detail; available data works fine for many applications; do not use skeleton models.
